Matt Serra The Future UFC Lightweight Champion

Let’s get things straight, I’m saying that Matt Serra has no chance against Georges St Pierre in their UFC welterweight championship bout on April 7, 2007 in Houston Texas. What I am saying is that Matt “The Terror” Serra will be a future champion in the UFC lightweight division.

The UFC does not have another fighter like Matt Serra. Serra is a brilliant fighter, a fighter with a 7-4 MMA record, 5-4 in the UFC. Huh? How can I call a fighter with a record like that brilliant? As is often the case in combat sports, Matt Serra is not defined as a fighter by his victories, but by his losses and Matt Serra’s losses are impressive!

Matt Serra’s first loss came in May 2001 to none other than Shonie Carter. Matt Serra was dominating this fight and was ten seconds away from winning when Shonie caught Matt with an impressive spinning back fist. That back fist has become the staple of every MMA knockout highlight reel since. Matt has since avenged his loss to Shonie, but since it was part of the Ultimate Fighter reality series and only a two round fight, the victory does not show on his official record.

BJ Penn was the next MMA wizard to defeat Matt Serra. We all know BJ Penn. He’s the rubber man, he is unbelievably talented and flexible. BJ Penn may very well have the most natural talent of any fighter in MMA. That said, Matt Serra lost a very close decision to BJ Penn. I believe that a rematch between these two fighters should be in order. Perhaps it will happen at welterweight, or more appropriately back at lightweight where I believe both of these guys are at their best.

Matt Serra’s next loss is a bit iffy. He lost a decision to Din Thomas. Again, I believe Din Thomas is a good fighter, but I’m not sure why Matt Serra couldn’t finish him. It’s in the books as a Din Thomas victory, but if these two fought again today I am certain that Matt Serra would win.

Karo Parisyan also decisioned Matt Serra, this loss coming in June of 2005. Karo is an excellent Judo/BJJ/Ground fighter, so it’s no surprise that this fight went to a decision. Basically both guys strength canceled each other out.

That’s four losses, but all four come to well known accomplished fighters. Also, all four fighters are still in the mix, moving their way back up into contention for belts at lightweight and welterweight.

Georges St Pierre is standing in the way of Matt Serra taking the UFC welterweight title on April 7. I don’t believe anything short of an injury during the fight will prevent Georges from winning that fight. Full apologies to Matt if he thinks I’m disrespecting his skills, it’s not that, it’s just that I think Georges is just naturally too big and too good a striker for Matt to be effective. Georges has excellent take down defense and good ground and pound, I believe he will win this fight, let’s hope it’s a good one though.

Matt Serra belongs at lightweight. This is his natural weight class and he would do very well there. I believe that Matt has current lightweight champion Sean Sherk beaten in both ground skills (BJJ) and striking. The only spot Sherk has an advantage is wrestling skills, however Serra is very dangerous from his back. I believe that after Matt Serra gets this fight with Georges St Pierre over with, he will return to rule the lightweight division, and hopefully set up a rematch with BJ Penn.

Sickness & memory loss? Help?

For the last week I have had a flu of some sort. I thought it was a hangover but I usually resume my (anxiety) & other meds once the "icky" feeling from drinking goes away. Problem is I have huge chunks of memory missing. I was so far gone I thought my mom had taken me to the hospital but she had called 911 & followed. I was there for about 8 hours in the ER with an IV & my potassium was real low. I had been like I said before so I was able to hold little food down. Now I am skinny LOL I just wonder how long it will last. Could I have been malnourished or what? IDK WHY i didn’t resume my meds but because I didn’t I went through benzodiazepine withdrawal. Today I am finally back on them again but I lost so much weight & I am still weak. I have to take these medications but what could have caused the blocks & blurs & distortions of time, days, people, etc. I was in coherent & my mom said I didn’t make sense sometimes. I’m back on them as of today but damn no wonder I feel so weird. Not to mention scared b/c I HATE moving & my loony tunes aunt is in town. I hope I get a little help & I hope it goes fast b/c I HATE moving. How could I lose memory from being sick? The hospital even did a CT scan because I fell & hit my head during a seizure. I guess one advantage of Houston is you’re usually near a hospital unless you’re in the boonies.

Some big road wins by Seattle and Chivas USA this week. Seattle’s win all but clinched a spot in the playoffs for the Sounders, and Chivas win put them back into the thick of the hunt for 1st place in the western conference. There are 2 huge games looming for Western conference heavy weights: LA at Houston and Houston at Chivas which will likely decide who gets the top seed in the West.

I am loving this season so much. I havent been able to watch it latley but its just so intense

Jermain Taylor The Good, Bad, the ugly. Where does he go from here ?

A funny thing happened to me last Friday, I was in the barbershop talking boxing with a few of the guys their, and I asked who they thought was going to win the Super Six. Out of all the names that people tossed around one guy said Andre Dirrell another Andre Ward however the name that shocked me was Jermain Taylor.

I started thinking about Jermain and his career, he went from HBO’s Golden Boy to an after thought in Showtimes Super Six tournament. Jermain has defiantly been tested with more world class competition than anybody in the tournament and his resume is a reflection of that.

We all know that he’s suffered some devastating losses as of recently and his back is up agents a wall this time out. He’s been knocked out twice and now is matched with arguably the biggest puncher in the tournament. Most people aren’t giving Jermain a chance to beat Arthur Abraham nor win the tournament for that matter.

Jermain’s "Achilles Heal" has always been his conditioning. From what I understand he’s moved his training camp from Little Rock to Houston Texas where former Heavyweight champion George Foreman has been the overseer of Taylors training regime.

Bad Intentions Taylor has never been short on athletic ability speed, power, determination I’m really starting to wonder if he can improve his conditioning he might be more of a threat than some actually realize in this tournament.

Arthur Abraham who he is scheduled to fight is a favorite to win not only his bout with Taylor but the whole tournament. However I don’t think he has faced anybody as tough as Jermain or as skilled, with this being his 1st fight at a new weight class Jermain could be the "spoiler" in the 1st round. Taylor has the speed,power, and experience too give Abraham more trouble than most have anticipated.

Any Thoughts ?

Jermain has something to prove and I think he will beat Abraham convincingly on points, he is capable of beating anyone in the tourney on a good night. It’s surprises me on how many are writing him off as well.
